The wound is the place where the light enters you ~ Rumi

My ideal client is someone who understands the importance of mindfulness and being connected with their own body. They may have a current contemplative practice, or they have a strong intention to start one. Ideally my clients have some interest or practice in spirituality and they are ok with the tenets of Buddhist psychology/philosophy.  Finally, my ideal client is someone who is committed to deepening into themselves by coming to therapy regularly.

Tired of talking in therapy and getting nowhere? Current neuroscience tells us that up to 80% of who we are is outside of our conscious awareness. If that is so, what is inside of us? What’s causing the feelings and behaviors which brought us to therapy? Perhaps you’ve been to therapy before and talked about the problems you have, but things didn’t change much. Certainly talking is necessary to exchange information and more importantly to build a rapport between us and our therapists. But there has to be something more right? That’s where “depth-work” or “core-level therapy” comes in.

So, getting back to that question, “what is it inside of us that is driving that 80%?” Answer: Unconsciously held beliefs about ourselves and the world we live in that were “wired in” developmentally AND somatic tensions and holding patterns that inform our psychology. Developmentally formed strategies for surviving in less-than-perfect circumstances, but which no longer serve us. But how do we get down into this core material which determines how we are organized around our experience of life, of ourselves,  our relationships? This is where mindfulness comes in. Not the everyday type of mindfulness, or the mindfulness required of meditation, although those are certainly valuable in their own right. We use mindfulness in the session to slow down enough to notice ourselves and to stay with and deepen into our present experience. We notice thoughts, emotions, body sensations, impulses, restrictions, wounds, protections, images, memories, words, beliefs, etc… Sometimes sensation in the body can be an entryway into deepening into content. This is called “bottom up processing” and it can not be achieved with merely “problem talking.” The therapist who works at the core puts a premium on the present experience of the client, moment to moment, in the session.

The core-level therapist doesn’t presume to know “what is wrong with you” or “what you should do.” The answers are at your core, they are literally inside of you right now! Only by going inside, feeling your feelings, discovering yourself, and healing old wounds, will you begin to free yourself from the automatic habits, emotions, and behaviors which drove you to therapy. This work is deeply satisfying for both the client and the therapist. This type of work has transformed my life, and my relationships with my loved ones and myself. It is sacred, tender, and noble work. I would be honored to go on a journey with you if you dare to look and feel inside yourself!
